BAGEL$

Why are my bagels $3 each? Bagel ingredients are expensive and the baking process is labor intensive. Let me break it down for you:

Per bagel, my costs are as follows: organic flour is $0.22, salt is $0.01, 2 types of malt used are $0.05, cinnamon $0.02, everything toppings $0.02, raisins, $0.04 (note: cinnamon, everything toppings, and raisins were weighted per batch since not all bagels use those toppings). So, the grand total for the cost of ingredients per bagel is approximately $0.36, or $8.64 for a batch of 24 bagels. In labor, it takes me 2 hours and 20 minutes per batch (over a 24 hr period of waiting and actual mixing/baking), plus another 20 minutes per batch coordinating orders, plus another 20 min delivering bagels, plus another hour marketing on social media (blog, website, instagram), so 4 hrs in labor. I decided to start my salary at $15 an hour. So for a batch of 24 bagels, I pay myself $60. If I make a batch of 24 bagels, and sell them for $3 a bagel, I make $72 ignoring any labor and material cost. Subtracting my total costs (material cost of $8.64 and labor costs of $60) from the $72, I make $3.36 in profit for each batch of 24 bagels, which is probably just enough to cover electricity, utilities, and renting kitchen space from my parents… You are probably understanding why my bagels are $3/each. It’s a lot of work. All things considered, my bagels are soooooo worth it!
